October 2014 Newsletter

Meeting called to order at 7:30pm.

This is our first meeting for the 2014/2015 season!

ABCSnow was founded in 2006 as an alternative to the BCSF. Our President , Ron Fowler, has been the vice-president of ABCSnow for the past 2 years. He resigned that position in September 2014 due to the direction ABCSnow is taking to amalgamate with the BCSF. The SSA Board of Directors voted unanimously in September, not to renew our membership with ABCSnow.

Oasis has confirmed that they will continue to provide us with the same level of insurance coverage with no increase in premiums. We will also realize approximately $4000 in savings annually.

We have been a non-profit organization for over 40 years. In that time, we have done everything by ourselves and our sponsors, when it comes to raising money. Over the past year, we have sourced other avenues of revenue. We were successful in our application for a $10,000 grant from the Wetzinkwa Community Forest Corporation, and have received a $5,000 grant from the BC Parks Enhancement Fund. Our application for $19,143 from the National Trails Coalition is still pending.

First off, THANK YOU to everyone who has helped over the summer on our infrastructure. Without all of the volunteer hours put in, the SSA couldn’t exist. Over the summer Parker Place got a new snow grate in front of the door, the deck upgraded, and a new outhouse! The Burdette shelter had a snow grate installed and the outhouse repaired and painted. The JE shelter had some new skirting and a snow grate installed. More signs have been installed in shelters and some firewood has been stocked. More firewood is always needed so everyone feel free to take a load up to shelters. If anyone has any information regarding the vandalism done to our properties, please contact Ron or the RCMP.

New Website

We are soon to launch a new website and facebook page. The website will be smart phone and e-commerce compatible. Just imagine, you can soon buy your membership on-line!! The website will help build awareness of what we do and why all snowmobilers should support our organization. The website will also give recognition and value to our sponsors. There will be an ever-changing banner with sponsors logos that will bring you to their website with a click of the mouse. The website will also keep current information on the status of trails, shelters, snow packs, avalanche conditions and caribou.

This year’s first prize will be a 2015 BRP Can-Am Outlander L 450 equipped with a winch and snowplow. Tickets will be for sale at all three sled dealers in town, Evergreen, Wayside, and Trails North. We can’t sell tickets without volunteers. We need volunteers on Fridays and Saturdays in front of the liquor store and Canadian Tire. Tickets will be available soon, watch your inbox for more information.

User Fee Collecting

Once again there will be user fee collectors at all our trail heads for those who choose not to purchase an annual membership. This is a necessity as it costs a lot of money to groom trails, maintain groomers, maintain shelters, purchase raffle units etc, etc. Please purchase an annual membership and please recommend to your friends to purchase them as well. We have the support from BC Parks and Recreational Sites and Trails Branch that they will assist our fee collectors.

There is still a voluntary closure in the Telkwa Mountains due to the continuing decline of the Northern caribou. We have taken the position that it is not snowmobilers, but predators, that are the main reason for the decline in numbers. Having said that, it’s important to respect this voluntary closure! Please sacrifice the present for the future. If people continue to ride in there, the government could legislate the closure.
The northern boundary of the area is the Telkwa River, west boundary is the Bulkley River, south boundary is the Morice River, and the east boundary is Burnie River up to the Telkwa River.

Thank you to Shelley who has been our sponsorship director for nine years now. She has done an excellent job of securing sponsors for the SSA during this period. She will continue to support the SSA but wants to focus more on her family, job, business and their dream home. We wish Shelly and Les much success in their future endeavors. Thanks again for all you have done.

The grooming committee is in the process of doing some upgrades to our two machines. Thanks to our sponsors, Hy-Tech, Babine Truck and Apex for your continued support!

Canadian Avalanche Centre is No Longer

That’s right, the CAC no longer exists! Well maybe that’s not quite right. They have changed their name to Avalanche Canada! In past years under ABCSnow, we supported the CAC to the amount of $1,500 per season. We will continue to support them as an independent organization.

Thanks to our Sponsors

The SSA would like to thank all of their sponsors for supporting us every year. This is an important revenue generator, we couldn’t exist without you!
