Shelter Report

We got lucky at the Dome. The door to outside was wide open and the door to the wood shed were both wide open but no critters were found inside. Please remember to close the door and lock the pin.

Lucky again up Harold Price as Highland Helicopters and P&R Exploration teamed up to sling up some firewood and propane. They have plans to bring firewood up to the Burdette Onion shelter in the near future. Big thanks to Shane and Peter!

The Onion and the Dome were both done on March 8th. Unfortunately it is spring time and the warm weather didn't allow the trail to hold up very well.

We are trying to schedule the groomer up the Mic to be taken out soon. We would like to do it before the road gets really bad. If we don't then the groomer stays out there for a long time while we wait for the road to dry up. The road isn't graded during the summer so it gets really bad and we have to pay larger lowbed fees.

Frank Parker Onion Main

We are planning on tearing down this shelter this summer. It's in really bad shape due to its age and a combination of lack of upkeep by volunteers and some users leaving food and garbage laying around after use. Our plan is to build a new shelter in the same spot; one that is smaller, more rodent resistant and easier to maintain. This is not an easy undertaking. We need to take it apart and haul it down the mountain a truck at a time and take the leftovers to the dump. We estimate that it could cost up to $50,000 to tear down and a minimum of $62,500 to build a new one.

Other summer projects

The insurance company is changing how they insure our shelters, specifically in how they rate wood stoves and their floor pads. All stoves used must have a rated certification and they all must have a large enough floor pad and wall pad. Each new stove will cost apprximately $1,100. Updates that need to be done include:

Harold Price: Needs a new floor pad.

JE Cabin: Needs a new stove.

Onion Burdettes: Needs a new stove.

Dome: Needs a new stove and a floor pad.

Sinclair: Needs a new stove and floor pad. We're not going to do and therefore not insure.

Old Mic: Needs a new floor pad: We're not goint to do and therefore not insure.

So the top 4 shelters need to be done this summer. Is there any volunteers to complete these jobs?

With the large expenditures forecasted the next couple of years such as the tear down and building of a new shelter up the Onion, we are going to hire Mindy Stroet to help us find and apply for some grants. Mindy is a professional grant writer located in Smithers. On a very rough estimate and the short timeline that we are giving her, she thinks there may be up to $40,000 of grants available. But to receive grants we have to commit money. It works best if we commit $10,000 or more to expenditures.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be on June 13th, 2018. We usually don't meet at this time but we need to coordinate all of the summer avtivities. It would be great if we got a large turnout at that time.
