Smithers Snowmobile Association

April 2017 Newsletter

Shelters

The Dome, Cronin lookout and Harold Price are all in great shape to end the season. The Both shelters on the Onion are good, Sinclair and the Mic shelters are clean.

Equipment

The Blue groomer is back in town now. The Mic road was good enough so the Red groomer was brought back in as well. We need to change the draw bar on the Blue groomer.

Membership

We didn't receive any final numbers this week but we should be in around the 160 mark. Considering the snow pack this year we think this is a great number. User fee collections also went well this year. We thank everyone who has supported the Smithers Snowmobile Asociation this year!

Summer projects

We will need some firewood brought up to all of the shelters this summer so if anyone has the time please bring some with you. There are some signs that need to be placed on some trails, there are some stumps on the Dome trail that are making it very hard to groom, the door and chimney need to be fixed at the Sinclair shelter, the Sinclair trail needs to be brushed out and we would like to put an outhouse at 19km.

BCSF Meeting

During this meeting we had the director of the BCSF call in. This gave us a great chance to ask her how the BCSF could benefit the SSA.

The BCSF represents snowmobilers as a whole and the greater numbers they have the more clout they will have in trying to receive funding from the provincial and federal government. They are more informed of how to access funding, such as from the "beetle fund" which we were not aware of. The BCSF would also be able to help us keep riding areas open, negotiating with the governments in respect to caribou and environmental issues. Joining the BCSF should give our members better insurance and would help our board of directors be aware of and complete government paperwork.

The main drawback from joining the BCSF is money. Based on their membership fee structure it would cost us close to $6,300 per year. This is a large portion of our yearly operating budget.

This portion of the meeting was used as a way for our members to gain information first hand from the BCSF so that they could make a more informed decision in the future. No decisions were made in regards to joining the BCSF this meeting.
